For much of the history of the United States Congress has had sole responsibility and authority over what is called “the power of the purse”, or the power to appropriate and reappropiate funds in the governments coffers. No more. Now, through executive action the current President can reappropiate funds for a major project. The precedent set is astounding.
The current Mayor of New York City, Mayor Bill DeBlasio is perhaps one of the most disingenuous “progressives” currently serving the people in the United States in his own capacity. Tonight, we dig into some of this hypocrisy.
Tonight, Governor Cuomo issued is annual State of the State address and addressed many issues that New Yorkers are facing – some more pressing than others. He lauded his accomplishments and spoke of “practical progressivism”. Governor Cuomo is not a true progressive. A Democrat he may be, but a progressive in the same vein as Franklin Roosevelt he is not.
The Community & the Police of New York City
By. Raimondo Graziano
New York City struggled for many decades on the issues of crime, poverty, homelessness and lawlessness and in recent years has made significant progress from the help of members of the community, law enforcement and our elected officials. Though too often do we see that the three are very out of touch with one and the other. The needs of the community are not represented by those in office, and those meant to protect and serve their interests are in some cases not reticent or not representative of the values of the community – even in some cases doing more harm than good. This is a terrible disparity that needs to be rectified. The community, our elected officials and law enforcement need to work closer together to rectify the issues that plague our communities. Politicans need to work to address growing inequality, homelessness, affordability in living standards and other issues.
We have seen in recent months increased public transportation enforcement, including arrests some justified and others widlly out of line. What the state needs to understand is that by encouraging further enforcement you are only going to continually criminalize those who are in poverty for not being able to afford a wage which can gain them access to the ever increasing costliness of public transportation. Our politicans are somewhat to blame for this for failing to address rising inequality and a staggering homelessness crisis in the city. Coming down hard on people trying to make a living, such as vendors in the stations, does not increase quality of life for all New Yorkers. It is categorically antithetical to the spirit of the New Yorker.
Likewise, those in the community who are not in law enforcement or who have no family member in law enforcement who may have a certain perception of how law enforcement is has to work to break down their preconceptions as to what it means to be a police officer. By no measure is it a simple career or undertaking. There is a great deal of scrutiny, as their should be, and a great deal of stress involved. That being said – it is not easy being a poor, minority person of color in this city either. There is a prevalent fear that one may be targeted simply based on the color of their skin, and that they are under the suspicion of being guilty until proven innocent. Only when the community and the law enforcement meant to protect them begin to open a more constructive dialogue, and when our politicans start doing their damn jobs are we going to see a change in the hows and whys of this great, sometimes troubled city.
The Arrogance of So-Called Conservative Politicians Across The Country
By. Raimondo Graziano
Too much has been co-opted by the conservatives of this country, too many inherently American values have been forcibly taken by the conservative wing of our political body in order to be used to push their partisan agenda that first and foremost benefits the elites, and secondly preys on the good nature of American citizens in order to convince them that the they have the truest claim to the identity of that of a true American. They talk of American values, and our cherished Constitution – yet they trample them through voter suppression, gerrymandering, and their obstructionist hardliner ways. They speak of family values and morals yet the man they so callously back has been accused of numerous violations of any definition of moral goodness, a man who has professed heresies that are antithesis to their supposed Christian values.
From these to more, to the flag to the Armed forces and law enforcement of the country – at every turn they consistently seek to divide Americans even on those things which are common to us all, and which at the end of the day belong to us all. In short – they are charlatans, hucksters, frauds and moral degenerates. They prey on the goodness within to forment a rot throughout in order to prop up their financiers and funders. And how masterfully do they craft their messages and their public statement’s, how quickly do they align themselves with God, an infallible all knowing being or tremendous power whom they claim as their own – how snakelike they are propping themselves up to be on the side of moral righteousness, defending the unborn and supporting the troops. They operate in half measures in their proclaimed righteousness – they simply preach their message but then when the time is right for just action, they shrivel into the worm and vermin they are. They defend the unborn until the child is born, then the small babe is left to fend for itself in the Darwinistic world they envision. They support the troops who give their lives in pursuit of a politicans conquest abroad until that soldier is out in the streets with no home and no support.
They are for business and the growth of the American economy – so long as that means major multinational corporations who shift their profits abroad to ensure they dont pay their way in the country that gave them everything. They are fiscally conservative, when gutting social security and Medicare but not when it comes to the egregious size of our defense budget or when we run mind boggling deficits, but if done under a liberal or a democrat – woe unto them who hast not balanced thy budget. Citizens who are conservatives are not to blame, the people rarely are. It is the rouse that poltiicans employ, it is the self-described conservatives on Capitol Hill and in all the state houses across the country who are to blame for the fomenting of political divisions that exist today. Not only have they attempted to hijack core American institutions for their nefarious poltical purposes, but they would have the public believe that it is the other side of the political aisle that is destroying the moral fabric of our nation.
They would have you believe that it is immigrants who have run our economy into the ground and it is migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who have taken American jobs. As if they did not sign onto the trade agreements which incentivised corporations to move their manufacturing bases oversees. They are dodgers, frauds, liars, cheats, hypocrites and all in all – against the wellbeing of our democracy, our Republic and the ideals that the United States stands for. Their practices are a danger to order and stability and they must be voted out and silenced from our legislative chambers once and for all through a true democratic majority across the entire diverse demographics of the nation. To preserve the sanctity of our American Project and the promise of our future- they, the elites and their funders, must be stopped. Those who proclaim their rightness so brazenly and boldly are often the ones to watch with the keenest of eyes.
